Born and raised on Vancouver Island on the coast of British Columbia, Stuart Bailey grew up with the rugged beauty of the Canadian West. Growing up, he spent summer days sailing the Gulf Islands, kayaking the rivers, and hiking the Canadian ‘Rockies.’ So was born his love of nature. What fascinated him most was the grace and form of animals. suggesting the lines and curves that would ultimately develop his signature style, the soapstone stylized creatures that invite the human touch.
Over 30 years ago, Stu discovered the intrinsic beauty of California soapstone and his free-flowing interpretive style was born. His award-winning work is recognized for emphasizing the unique color, the natural form and spirit of each of his subject pieces, without cumbersome detail.
His recent work explores the amazing beauty and colors of California alabaster, native to the desert area around Borrego Springs. His painstaking selection of shapes, sizes and colors are transformed into stylized white buffaloes or ghostly visions of Indian figures and abstract forms. Combining pieces with the use of other media such as wood and metal, the alabaster has added another dimension to this accomplished artist’s repertoire.
