Botanical art created by nature is the theme of this workshop. Surrounded by the beauty of Borrego Springs, participants will be introduced to alternative photo processes focusing on cyanotype. Students will create cyanotype photograms using nearby plant material or digital negatives, play with wet cyanotype techniques, and survey the work of other artists in the field.

The class offers a hands-on opportunity to explore cyanotype and experiment with different natural substances to tone your prints providing unlimited pleasure, discovery, and surprises.
Registrants are welcomed to bring favorite plants or negatives, but there will be plenty plant material for all to use.

Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained.

Holly Hutton’s work focuses on alternative photo processes. For decades her art has been a manifestation of a changing repertory of techniques, primarily focused on various alternative photo processes, collage, mixed media and the incorporation of found objects. Her current series is focused on cyanotype toning with botanicals, based on her botanical knowledge as an herbalist.

This series explores the world of plants, which drives her imagery, through colors, textures, shapes, shadows, and forms. Motivated by the need to escape the present dystopian themes facing us front and center, I find peace in beauty and simplicity in nature as artists have throughout history, with the occasional work reflecting the state of the world and my despair. In a nutshell, my artistic pursuits foster my survival in what I consider a perilous world.
